MSSL MD's column in latest issue looks back on the origins of the Standard
MSSL Managing Director Sean Smith has written about British standards in LV switchgear for the latest issue of Electrical Contracting News.
In a column entitled "10 Years of a Blueprint for Best Practice", Sean considers how BS EN 61439 has become a shorthand for LV switchgear assembly standards.
He notes that it is relatively rare for issues arise with LV switchgear assemblies.
However, Sean adds that - when issues do occur - it can be years after installation and the consequences can be catastrophic.
"Increased load and prematurely ageing materials can cause under-rated components and poorly-designed assemblies to overheat and catch fire," writes Sean.
"That’s why, 10 years ago, BS EN 61439 became compulsory and superseded BS EN 60439.
"This was updated for manufacture of low voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies.
"It redefined the minimum standard of how assemblies are designed, constructed and installed.
"In one fell swoop, the Standard brought new order, safety, and reliability to the design, manufacture, and assembly of low voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies."
Reflecting on the article, Sean said: "It was great to have been able to contribute to this fantastic edition of the ECN magazine.
"I wanted to write about best practice within the industry, as well as British Standards compliance.
"Safety is paramount in the LV switchgear industry and Michael Smith Switchgear Ltd is proud to be a member of BEAMA.
"We are the trade association for our sector of the industry and I am extremely honoured to Chair the ESPG Management committee within it.
"It was great to be included in ECN again and thank you to Editor Carly Weller for the opportunity."
